No peanutbutter and jelly sandwichs in Nickajack Elementary School
|This law comes to us from Nickajack Elementary School, located in Smyma, Georgia. All Peanut products are banned in the school. Peanut allergies are serious! but many consider this an extreme measure! Sorry Mr. George Washington Carver, you are not welcome in this school…

You say “Schools should made aware of the allergy and know what to do in case of accidental exposure. It should be a mandate that a parent must provide the school with an EpiPen.”
But I must disagree, only with the point of “IT SHOULD BE A MANDATE” –
Parents should do this WITHOUT another nanny-state mandate or law… or even school rule. Just use common sense…
Like, hey, if I go fishing, I am using sharp pointy objects (hooks) so I should be a little pro-active and take a first aid kit with me… Don’t ya think?!?
By extension, an epi-pen would just be common sense.
I do wholeheartedly agree that “parents should provide” it…
To parents whining that you love your kids so much and everyone is so selfish for not making concessions, keep in mind the child is YOUR responsibility in all aspects, and you should not in any way IMPOSE on others. You should be the one making concessions.
By abdicating your role of responsibility, you must accept the consequences of your decision, even if that is a default decision to not make a decision.
Don’t whine about selfishness – of others. Turn that light upon yourself. Your child should be your responsibility.
Sorry, skin contact can cause a rash, but will not cause anaphylaxis.
Smelling peanut butter will not cause a reaction. There are no proteins in odor.
Skin contact will not cause a reaction. It will happen in you get it on your fingers then touch your eyes or mouth.
That is directly from a Mt. Sinai Medical Center study.
Schools should made aware of the allergy and know what to do in case of accidental exposure. It should be a mandate that a parent must provide the school with an EpiPen.
Stop banning peanut butter from schools.
I don’t understand how to Reply to people. i got a few responses to my Comments. i got a comment just a few days ago. When i click Reply i get a thing saying Error–problem with The website, yet people can reply to me. i can’t respond to their comments. How do i do it? Again, i click reply, I get a message saying i can’t. How do these others get through? Just Curious.
First of all, sorry about all of your kids (either the ones deprived or the ones who are allergic), but before any of you go on about “my child can die from the mere scent of peanut butter”…I’m sorry, but this is not medically accurate. There is a protein in peanut butter that must be ingested to produce a serious reaction. This protein is not present in the scent of peanut butter itself (peanut dust, yes, odor, NO.) The peanut butter protein has to enter the body by actual direct contact.
Don’t believe me?

Touching the peanut butter is still, however, a problem since it would cause a minor reaction and if the child happened to rub their eyes or put their hands in their mouth a more serious reaction would occur.
I study medical science like the Bible and I’m a Bioengineer student. There’s such a thing as extreme paranoia when it comes to parents. If I was a parent, I’d probably be the same way, but please, support your theories with facts.

@ Rowen
I completely concur.
Absolutely correct!
More laws won’t help.
Home school.
In fact, why not just get rid of public schools all together and allow parents to form their own learning systems, if they don’t want to have to do it all on their own?
Micro-communities, phyles, whatever.
Form small LLCs or NPs and make your own small schools…
Just a thought.
Makes me wonder…
What is happening to the immune systems of the people in the U.S.? I have lived in many countries and it seems that the only place to be having such huge problems with things as mundane as a peanut is the U.S.
I wonder what good ol’ Charles Darwin would have to say when an organism develops a fatal reaction to something so prevalent in the environment…
Oh man, that’s going to catch hell…
pEggy, I absolutely agree. My heart goes out to those parents with children that have such life threatening allergies, but the truth is, banning peanuts, peanut butter, and anything containing peanuts from school is like putting a bandaid on a broken leg. Sure, from the time they get to school to the time they leave school, there might not be any problems, but say that child goes to the park and there are kids there that are having peanut butter and crackers for a snack, then what do you do. Do you ban all peanut products from the public park? This is pretty much the beginning of outlawing peanuts altogether. Then what? All milk products, shellfish, chocolate, etc. Where does it end? And someone breathing in peanut butter and going into anaphylactic shock is pretty rare. You actually have to ingest it in order for that to happen. I’m not saying that keeping PB sandwiches out of schools is stupid, but what is your child going to do when they are an adult and in a working environment?
PPPAThis is a comment to Melissa. I had 3 comments, did you read them ALL? Probably not. I started out by saying that I felt that it was a stupid law then said that i didn’t read far enough. i knew there were some kids who were allergic, I didn’t know bthat just the SMELL could kill them. So, instead of attacking me, realize I made 3 comments, I did say HOME SCHOOLING is an option.I said it not to be cruel, but if they are so allergic, it might be the safe option. I also said that there is NO WAY you can totally AVOID peanuts, unless you putb your kid in a bubble. They could be walking down the Street, pass a kid who just had a poeanut butter Sandwich, smell it, and—-I think you get it. Or in the grocery store, where they sell peanuts in the shell. They could get near them—-Kids themselves should be EDUCATED, if they are olod enough. They should tell people thyey are allerguic to peanuts. I’m curious, do yiou have WORSESTERSHIRE sauce in your cupboard at home? i have heatrd that even it contains peanuts. So,if you do have bit—–Get rid of it. Are you goiungb to make sure your kid has NO friends who eat peanut Butter Sandwiches? I realize tyou have a hard job. And I do have allergies—-a few, just not peanuts. I understand the problem. So, don’t go and try to make otheres feel they are not understanding poeiople. DO YOUR PART. As i said,. i wrote 3 notes, so don’t judge me. Yiou CANNOT totaslly avoid peanuts. You can try. Home Schooling is an option.
I think it sad that some people are so cruel that do not care about anybody but themselves. If it was your child you would sing a different song. Peanut allergies have become very common. Maybe the ones mad should be mad at the peanuts and not the kids??? To be able to attend a public school with such a severe allergy is a blessing. It is a disability just as other students have. Would you say “don’t put a handicap ramp up if they cant walk they should just stay at home” ? Well some people might, but I would hope not. These children could DIE if they come in contact with PEANUTS. God Bless you and I hope you never have such a severe allergy. And if you or your children ever do I hope you come revisit your ugly posts!
I don’t think this is a stupied law. For some food’s it should be something in place. My daughter is allergic to dairy but Im not going to force no dairy but also just smelling it or being around it wont make her have a reaction. I know alot with peanut allergies just the smell and for a child it could kill them quick. Its not like the children can’t go home and have a pb&j just why they are not at school. It will also teach them to be aware of others and there needs something alot of adults have forgoten about kindness and consern for others. Doing that for others can be helpfull for your self also….
You know, laws like this ARE the problem. With each small intrusion into your life, the government, i.e. School boards, city councils, e.p.a.,etc,take just a little more of our freedoms away. Take some responsibility for yourselves and educate your kids. I will not allow these rediculous nanny laws dictate how I will or CAN live my life. You folks who think this ok are hastening the fall of liberty in this, the “Land of liberty” and of freedom. To be honest, I really dont care if you think I am selfish. Give me liberty or give me death!!!!!! I am sick of this shit!!! If you kids allergy is so bad the the smell will kill them, take them out of public school and home school them! But leave me and mine alone!!!!
There’s a great article that people on *both* sides of the issue should read entitled: “Why your Child Can’t Bring Peanut Butter to School (and What you Can Do About It)”: http://snacksafely.com/2011/11/why-your-child-cant-bring-peanut-butter-to-school/
Such stupid idiots! I’ve read that “peanut allergy has doubled since 19??, (forgot the actual yr) but you know what else has doubled? MEDIA HYPE and scare-shitless parents who cry about their kids and ruin it for the rest of healthy kids. Its Simple: kids with allergies- don’t bring p&j sandwich, kids who don’t have that allergy, bring as many as the wish! But crlet the normal kids enjoy a tasty meal!
BTW, this seems less like a law and more like a school rule for that particular school. So the only stupid thing here is that it’s even on the site.
A peanut allergy is not like being lactose intolerant. It can kill. Have you ever noticed how many foods will specify when something’s been processed in the same places as nuts, because it may contain tiny traces of nuts? Did you think that was just to take up space on the label? Someone else’s child may not know NOT to touch a child with a severe peanut allergy after getting peanut butter on his/her own hands while eating lunch. The child with the allergy may not know that the kid next to him/her has peanut residue on his/her hands.
For the ignoramuses here:
“By Mayo Clinic staff
Peanut allergy is common, especially in children. Peanut allergy symptoms can range from a minor irritation to a life-threatening reaction (anaphylaxis). For some people with peanut allergy, even tiny amounts of peanuts can cause a serious reaction.
If you or your child has had a reaction to peanuts, tell your doctor about it. Peanut allergy is one of the most common causes of severe allergy attacks. It’s important to get even a minor reaction to peanuts checked out. Even if you or your child has had only a mild allergic reaction in the past, there’s still a risk of a more serious future reaction. “
I just read comments from MOTHER OF AN ALLERGIC CHILD. Definitely it is bad, especially if your kid could die. Why don’t you HOME SCHOOL your child? I know that not everyone can. But, there is no way you can totally avoid peanuts. your kid goes to another’s house, those kids maybe had a peanut butter sandwich–or they walk past a person, outside the school who just had a peanut butter sand. or —-i also read up on the things can contain peanuts. i thought i read that Worsteshire Sauce has peanuts.?i need to read a bottle of worsteshire sauce. I’ll have tio see if it contains peanut oil. So, IF you have worsteshire sauce in your home, get rid of it.
i didn’t read far enough into iy\t. i read that one’s 5 year old daughter is so allergic that tyhe smell could kill her. a person did make a valid point. What if a kid had peanut butter at home, came in, breathed near her little girl. if they’re that allergic, maybe they should be home schooled. You can’t avoid peanuts. Not really. What if her little girl is walking down the Street, someone had a peanut butter sandwich, came near her little girl. I guess I can see banning it in schools, esp. when some are that allergic to it, but you almost have to live in a bubble to totally avoid it. Does that make sense? Is there an allergy shot for someone with peanut butter, or peanut allergies?i never heard of one, but it might be interestin to look into, as again, unless you live in a glass bubble can you totally avoid peanuts/?Think of grocery stores that sell peanuts with shells. I don’t know if that would hurt someone with peanut allergies. Again, any kid thast allergic to peanuts should maybe be home schooled, and /or look into the possibility of an alklergy shot, if there is such a thing
i totally agree that it is a stupid law. parents need to let the teachers, cafeteria staff know that their child is allergic to peanuts. i can’t remember who said it, but a woman said her child is 5 yers old. i gthin k 5 years old is old enough to know that she shouldn’t eat peanuts. What about peopkle with egg allergies, milk, etc. Stop all foods with eggs, milk, etc. i don’t know where this shool is—Nickajack? i remember reading someplace that a school banned a book about George Washington Carver, BECAUSE IT HAD THE WORD PEANUT IN IT–AND IT COULD OFFEND PEOPLE WITH PEANUT ALLERGIES. Now that is STUPID. I read it someplace, and thought was really dumb. again, kids should be educated as to what they can and can’t eat, their parents need to be involved. But to make everyone not have peanut butter?peanut Butter is healthy to THE NON ALLERGIC ONES. I wonder if that same school bans kids bringing in their own lunch of peanut butter sandwiches. ??just curious
Pffffft!
Same thing in my school, but I just eat my PB sandwiches anyway. If somebody bitches, I fuck ’em with verbal reasoning.
I’m not going to refrain from eating something so ONE person will not get a rash from nuts. That’s just fucked up.
“Don’t be selfish, they have a problem” – Don’t be selfish, I want to have my PB sandwich!
If my school had over….I dunno, 80 kids with a nut allergy, sure, I’d stop bringing ’em in. But I sure as hell wont stop eating for one John Doe.
For the times I get yelled at for eating ’em, I say “Oh, I can’t have MY sandwich which I bought, made and brought here? Well, that’ll be a tenner, gas money, ingredients and enough to buy a few sandwiches will do.”
–My “Teachers” leave me the hell alone after those two lines.
How did we go from laws to infantile behavior? There’s plenty of modifications we can make in life with common sense. It doesn’t mean there needs to be a law about it. Example, I use the toilet when I need to use the restroom. I see no need for a law telling me not to do it in public.
Jennifer Maki it is your mom who did something stupid when she was pregnant (she did not get an abortion)
You people with the allergic kids did something wrong during pregnancy, when I went to school this was SOO not an issue! stupid gen y bitches!
Jennifer, I agree that this was NOT an issue when I was coming up. But you are a complete and utterly stupid human being thinking its a mother’s fault for the child being allergic to foods. My son has allergies but I didn’t do anything wrong while carring him, hell, I don’t even drink or smoke and never have. You really should seek counseling.
May GOD bless all of you that are so selfish. If your child was allergic to anything so much that they could not come near or smell or eat I would never expect your child to go to school and sit next to mine that was not allergic. God knows your heart. And for someone to call them retarded or short bus kids, may god bless you all and open your eyes and allow you to be absolutely grateful for what you have. God has a plan for us all? Do you know yours? I wouldnt start callin names just yet.
Peanut allergies are very serious, and I don’t think it’s any great hardship to let your little one go without a pb&j during the school day.
You have to remember, that a no sharing policy or dedicated tables aren’t enough to protect some kids, especially young kids.
Kids don’t have to eat it to have an allergic reaction. Their classmates eat pb and j and don’t wash hands at all or very well. They all use the same scissors, crayons, glue, toys, playdoh, etc.
That is all it takes to set of a potentially fatal reaction in a child who is too young to administer their own epinephrine.
As much as parents and the school districs try to educate teachers on medical emergencies, I will never feel comfortable that the teacher will see the reaction in time and remember what to do.
I cannot believe the IGNORANT, SELFISH, UNEDUCATED PEOPLE IN THIS POST. My 4yr old son just had a a severe reaction to treenuts that we didn’t know he was allergic to. It required calling 911 and shots to help him breath. My child has a right to an education and if your child ate nuts at school and touched something my child could DIE!! DIE!! Don’t you get it DIE!! What happens if your or your child eats a nut or peanut butter sandwish… NOTHING! DEATH!!DONT YOU GET IT DEATH. YOU could KILL my child. It will not kill you to not eat pb and J or nuts at school.
What? I went there as a kid… if you didnt pay your lunch money then you had to eat a penut butter sandwich. and in the sack lunches, they have peanut butter and honey sandwiches. if it’s illeagal then why the hell would they put the peanutbutter sandwiches in the sack lunches and give the kids peanut butters sandwiches when they dont pay there lunch money?
The kid is so allergic that even the smell of peanut butter can kill her. What is the kid going to do if the person two chairs down had a peanut butter sandwich for breakfast and unmeaningly breathes just right so the kid gets a whiff. Or a child comes to school with peanut butter on their hands and wipes their hand where the kid eventually will wipe her hand. What are the schools going to say? They can’t control what a child eats at home. If schools keep going like this eventually no meal will be offered, this kid will be allergic to this item and another kid to that item. We can’t tailor the menu so that nothing anybody is allergic to is served. They should offer other choices so the student doesn’t eat what they are allergic to, not do away with them completely. If the school needs to they should set up an allergy room so kids with allergies can go and eat their lunch safely and the majority doesn’t have to suffer with out.
This is an idea that schools need to look towards it is very serious. And most don’ take it seriously enough!
Excuse me… don’t go blaming those with allergies for making these laws. I’d instead look to yourselves to blame… if it were not for your ignorant and self righteous actions like what I’ve seen posted here laws like this would not be needed.
You seem to feel that everything is “not your problem” and bedamned about whether your precious child’s treat can kill their friends… never thought of that one either, did you? Never even once thought that the child your precious is seated near might be their best friend, and now they’ve just sent that friend into death? But no… it won’t happen to your child, so why should you care?
Did it also not occur to you compassionless people that simply SMELLING those peanut butter sandwiches can cause a major reaction and even kill those with allergies? They don’t even have to be in the same room either!
It is YOUR selfish and uncaring thinking that brought the law into effect, NOT the parents or the children with allergies. I’d suggest you ignorant folks with the “holier than thou” attitudes get off your own high horses and realize there is a “real” world out there that doesn’t revolve around you or your precious peanut eating killers.
“Get over your selfish attitudes and start thinking about others.”
So pushing away everyone’s rights
for one kid is selfish, but pausing everything for you is not selfish, MAKES PERFECT SENSE.
Survival of the fittest, blame yourself or blame your god.
to be quite honest i care more that MY CHILD doesn’t get to eat HER PEANUT BUTTER SANDWICH BECAUSE OF YOU LITTLE DEGENERATE KIDS WITH “PEANUT ALLERGIES”
Amen! what a stupid fucking rule….what are you parents doing wrong that your kids have these stupid fucking allergies! probably drank during pregnancy, stupid cunts
Wow. This is a serious issue, and allergies are hereditary not from complications during pregnancy.
I think its absolutely ridiculous that there is a peanut ban is schools.
The only kind of sandwich my child will eat is Peanut butter.Unfortunately i have to WORK therefore my child cannot come home for lunch.I suppose since your child is allergic,my child has to starve? DON’T THINK SO.! Maybe at lunch time they should put all the “short bus” kids in a separate room to eat lunch.:D
There are other options to eat. Just because peanut butter will not be served does not mean children will starve. This is a serious issue.
Most schools are either peanut butter free or have designated areas where children can sit and eat peanut butter at lunch. But with the rate that allergies are getting so severe and so many children are allergic it is the SAFE way to go. Most schools are latex free due to allergies too for the same reason. It has nothing to do with parenting, it has everything to do with major MEDICAL NECESSITY!!!! (and for those of you who are complaining since PB&J is a cheap lunch, bologna is pretty cheap too.
In reference to Kacie calling us as having selfish attitudes. That should be between YOU, THE TEACHERS, AND YOUR CHILD. So what your saying is that since your child is allergic to peanuts everybody else should suffer. Get a damn life and quit trying to destroy everybody else. Other kids enjoy peanutbutter but they have to suffer because of YOU!!! The problem as I see it is that YOU don’t know how to BE a PARENT.
HEY! it IS a stupid law because you’re stupid kids aren’t the only one. Banning sugar because kids get hyper will kill kids who have low blood sugar.. point is you cant please everyone so its up to YOU as the parents to make sure your kids don’t eat shit that will kill them. It’s your own friggin jobs you lazy fucks. this is why children are stupid and stupid shit like this is appeased. because you think the school should do your job for you instead of doing their jobs and teaching them. If little Tommy will die if he eats peanuts, its not the schools job to take them away from all the kids its YOUR job to teach little Tommy not to eat fucking peanuts!
if some kids are allergic to something thet dnt have to eat it and let the other kids not get the food that they like
i think that is the mot dumbst law ever that u cant serve peanutbutter and jelly at a school so that is what i think about that law!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i’m allergic to red food coloring… so i guess they gotta stop serving anything with that in it too… kacie and danielle you both need to get over your selves… i agree with josh… the world does not revolve around your children…
ha ha thats funny & retarted & if your is allergic to it then SO BID IT. (GET .OVER .IT)j/k
I am allergic to cinnamon. Does my allergy mean that everywhere must stop serving many things. Considering many everyday products are made with cinnamon. Ketchup, Coke Cola, and just about anything else that says in the ingredients natural flavors. Kacie you need to get over your self. The world doesn’t revovle around your child.
it should be more adaptable for her child. Just because your allergy is not severe does not mean her child’s is not. I speak from experience as an adult, it is extremely difficult and laws like this should be enforced. It is just food, you can bring something else. There are other options, especially if it will cause someone their life. It is extremely dangerous and scary.
OMG! This is stupid. If your child is allergic to peanuts they aint gotta get around them. I wouldn’t stop eating my PB&J because of some stupid law.
OMG did you know you dont have to be around them they could simply touch the same door knob you did after your PB&J. Means yummy treat for some and DEATH for others. We can all see which side of the fence your on
This is not a stupid law at all! I am a teacher and I have been in the hospital two times this week alone when someone brought in a peanut butter cookie in the hall. The class who was eating them were in the other side of the school. For those who are severe like me, this can be fatal. My throat closed off instantly and had to use my eppi pen and go to the ER.
I do not think a law needs to made like this, we have enough on the books already.
My son is allergis to peanuts along with 10 other foods. I agree completely with this law and for those who want to do more you should go to the website FAAN.com i believe is the site food allergy and anaphlaxies network. Do the reasearch he pass laws to keep our children safe when they are not in our care.
I cannot see how you can sit there and call this a stupid law. I have a 5 year old daughter who is so allergic to peanut that the smell will send her to the grave. Maybe you all should do your reasearch to find out how many children are born with peanut alleries a year. Peanunt is a treat for most and life or death to others. Get over your selfish attitudes and start thinking about others. This is not a hard change people. Get over it!!
Gee. Maybe they were dealing with a child with a peanut allergy.
