No work may be done on Sunday Law.
|It is against the law to get any work done on Sundays in South Carolina.
Title 53 – Sundays, Holidays and Other Special Days
CHAPTER 1.
SECTION 53-1-40. Unlawful to work on Sunday.Â
On the first day of the week, commonly called Sunday, it shall be unlawful for any person to engage in worldly work, labor, business of his ordinary calling or the selling or offering to sell, publicly or privately or by telephone, at retail or at wholesale to the consumer any goods, wares or merchandise or to employ others to engage in work, labor, business or selling or offering to sell any goods, wares or merchandise, excepting work of necessity or charity. Provided, that in Charleston County the foregoing shall not apply to any person who conscientiously believes, because of his religion, that the seventh day of the week ought to be observed as the Sabbath and who actually refrains from secular business or labor on that day.
Has anyone here been shopping on a sunday lately? Except for some counties/cities still banning alcohol sales on sundays most of these blue laws have been overturned. Any place that stays closed on sundays this day and time is due to the owner’s religious beliefs/convictions.
I HAVE GETTING FAST FOOD ON SUNDAY! WHO KNEW THAT THIS WAS ILLEGAL?!?!?!?!
it might have been a good law in the slavery days, but guess what you could work a slave on sunday. it just people trying to oppose their religious beliefs on others. europe made that law when they had slaves too thanks to fuedelism. i no historian but Marty come on ,if the business men in columbia sc running cared about us we would have a state minimum wage law in stead of the feds minimun $7.25 cents. and how about they make the boss give you a written reason for termination too. we are to bizzay thumpin our bibles and judgeing our neighbors to care about people
Also, Marty, please take note that we do not live in Europe! This is America. I agree that it is just religion in government where it DOES NOT BELONG!!! I own a lawn maintenance company and I do a couple commercial properties on Sunday because the parking lots are empty and I’m not bothering patients in the doctors offices. How dare government make it illegal to do so. It is simply ludacris to me.
Tim
Indeed, in Europe it’s common to have Sundays off. And even though originally motivated by religion, today it is mostly intended for recreation and against exploitation. But it’s not universal or only limited to “work of necessity or charity”, e.g. diners, gas stations, etc. are open, whereas department stores, factories and offices are closed. However, I think that the main reason why this law is featured here is that it seems so universal that it outlaws mowing your lawn on Sundays…
sunday law is bull shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is not an ‘idiot law.’ This is common practice in European countries to discourage workaholism and exploitation. It’s best to have everyone rest on the same day of the week, as that encourages community.
After seeing this, I have to respond that this is an ‘idiot website’; what a stupid website! Get rid of this dumb website!
This is indeed an idiot law, marty. Only an idiot couldn’t see that. It’s ridiculous to think that these onerous dictates are to promote community. Its simply a religion imposing it’s practices on unwilling citizens. Its a joke.
