Up until February 2007, it was against the law to speak any language other than English in the town of Pahrump outside of Las Vegas. The law which was enacted in November, 2006 was quickly pulled. Pahrump is known as one of the towns in Nevada where brothel’s (whore houses) are legal.

dear dave and rich it is american to speak spanish and english dave you should know that you live in “olde mexico” and by the way puerto rican spanish is american since 1889. and. and must i remind you navada is a spanish word. Navada is not even a border state , get over it.

This is America. We can not be divided with a million languages. This #$#@ with billboards in Spanish, signs in banks, etc. NEEDS TO GO!!!
You do a diservice to someone not to teach them and have them speak the language of the country WHICH IS ENGLISH! WHY IS IT PUNCH ONE FOR ENGLISH, 2 FOR SPANISH? NO.NO.NO. THIS HAS TO GO AS WELL!! WHY NOT PUSH 3 FOR GERMAN, 4 FOR FRENCH, 5 FOR CHINESE, ETC. ETC… THIS IS PURE#$%$#!! IF YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE LANGUAGE AND CULTURE HERE IN AMERICA GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM. MY GRANDPARENTS DROPPED THEIR LANGUAGE, SWEATED IT IN ELIS ISLAND AND COULD NOT HAVE ANY DISEASE WHEN THEY CAME HERE OR ANY CRIMES!!! ILLEGALS WHO SPEAK SPANISH NEED TO GO LIKE YESTERDAY!!! THERE IS ENOUGH UNEMPLOYMENT WITHOUT THEM AND ENOUGH CRIME…. STOP DIVIDING THIS COUNTRY WITH YOUR LANGUAGE!
English isn’t even the official language of the U.S. The U.S. has no official language, so there is no reason that people in the states that were part of Mexico shouldn’t primarily speak spanish

When my husband and I went to live in Germany during his tour in the Army, we had to take head start classes and learn their language. We were told,”you are a visitor in their country and you’ll speak their language”. That should apply to everyone who visits or lives in ours! I had to rely on little children to communicate in the classroom for their parents. Live here, learn it! Our road signs should NOT have a foreign language on them either, if you can’t speak it, you sure as hell can’t read it…

I’m from Las Vegas and this was a big news story when it was being voted on. It isn’t that it’s necessarily illegal to speak other languages, but English is the official language of Pahrump.
Umm…has everyone forgotten that it is still a requirement to be able to speak English to become a Citizen – and English is the official government language?

I live in Phoenix where it is in everyone’s best interest to speak Spanish, but…..since English is still the overwhelming language spoken in the USA, it should be encouraged to be spoken. By the way, why do nearly all billboards here have Spanish captions underneath English, but none of the many billboards in Spanish have ANY English captions? What if I were French? Should we also have French captions everywhere?
I have been to Mexico many times, and I use Spanish….period!
I’m from Pahrump, N.V. and I think it’s an acceptable law. If you are going to choose to live and work in the United States, you should know how to speak English. I wouldn’t got to Mexico and expect to get a job and whatnot and live there if I didn’t know how to speak Spanish. Common sense.

I live in Pahrump first off and I’ve never heard of this law, even though it may have been true.
Secondly why don’t you explain the racism behind this. It’s American to speak English. When you go out and can’t communicate with other Americans something is seriously fukcing wrong.
