I live in Oregon and I have a classic car so I can choose to pump my own gas if I want. Only about 5% of the time do I. Only at a Fred Meyer with 30 pumps and 1 attendent. I agree the law should be made optional. The gas station has to provide someone to pump your gas but you should be able to pump it if you want. Also if you have a motorcycle or a diesel the law allows you to pump it yourself.
This is the only law on this entire list that is actually true. They actually mad this law to make sure people don’t top off there tank or don’t pay as much as they should’ve
You know not having to get out of the car when it’s rainy, windy, snowing, or super hot and humid is fine with me.
The only reason I find this law purposeless is because everything else we do is wrong. This culture needs to burnt and rebuilt in a more intelligent manor. However, for the time, I have been to many states I can say with out a doubt Oregon is by far the best. We are unique and diverse and that is just who we are. Sure, we have flaws, but places like California, New York, Georgia, etc. are just foul. Oregon is beautiful and the fact that we still have our gas pumped is just nice. It can be a great college/high school job. The comments of people who don’t even live here are just silly. We don’t want sales tax, we don’t want to pump our own gas, and we don’t want to be like you! The fact that more and more people our moving here tells you something and I just hope those “green” Californians don’t all move here making us cut down our trees and destroy our beautiful landscape to make their homes. Please, stay out of this state, you other states are disgusting, boring, and rude. Keep Oregon….Oregon!
I thought I heard that they changed that law in NJ.

Hate to tell you this but NJ also has this law. The gas there is CHEAPER than neighboring states like NY and PA. Personally I don’t like getting out of my car in the dead of winter or heat of summer especially when its cheaper!

Why the heck does anyone care if someone pumps other people’s gas?
If you don’t like it, don’t come to Oregon, because we are not changing our laws to suit your dumbass.

I currently work at a gas station in Oregon, and I honestly don’t even understand how this is considered an idiot law, when full service was the norm until the 1970’s? 40 years passed, and now you’re an idiot if you work at a full-service gas station? Or the state actually sticked to their virtues?
Whenever I get someone from another state, since I work near the airport, and we’re close to a boarder, they are always shocked at first to see a full-service, and then love it. They feel like they’re being waited on, because they in fact are.
I wash their window when it’s dirty, check their oil when they ask, and I put exactly how much fuel they want. Is that really a bad thing? Am I stupid, or illiterate because of that? Or is it an opportunity to get great people skills, make some money, and get experience in the work area?
I myself am born and raised from Oregon, and don’t plan on moving any time soon. I’ll gladly continue having someone pump my fuel. Because it helps others make a living.
Here is a solution. I understand the jobs thing, I also understand
the pain in the ass thing when they are under-staffed, or busy.
It really erks me when I go to Fred Meyer and 4 of the pumps have cones in front of them, and there are lines for the remaining pumps. Happens way to often to be maintenance problems.
How about changing the law so that no more than 20% of the pumps can be designated “Self Service”. Look at super markets and self checkout, they have the staffed checkout lines and the non-staffed. That would help ease the pain when understaffed, they would still have to staff the gas station as if those pumps were also manned by the attendant. Think of all the jobs it would create to print out the new signs! Everyone wins! Seems like this would be the best way to have your cake and eat it too. I know people are sometimes freaked out by the attendants. They might wait in line for the self serve in those cases..
Let’s all take the time to point out that whoever posted this law can’t even spell the word “apparently”.

Taylor, get a motorcycle or a classic car and it is optional. It’s rarely a hassle to the consumer and it creates jobs..what’s the problem? As far as having no sales tax, I think you’re just jelous.

Being a lady, I stay in Oregon mostly for the convenience of having my gas pumped- the way the entire country should operate.
Why should I get out of my car in the rain, sleet, snow, cold and heat to pick up some huge pump in my delicate hands while in my high heels and beautiful dress to pump some strange ugly, dirty, greasy liquid in my car.
Are you guys crazy? or just challenged. I get it… some people have to find something to complain about.
The day they change the law- that and adding sales tax is the day I move away from Oregon.

Gas station attendants, we love you and this is why every time I get my gas pumped you get a tip.

Ally, how can you complain about other people complaining, after completing your own paragraph describing how difficult it is for you to perform such easy tasks of day to day life, such as walking?
I live in Texas and plan on moving to Oregon at the end of this year. I almost laughed when I first heard about this law.
Some people have argued on here that it opens jobs for people with disabilities or the elderly. This makes no sense when the law is partly kept to convenience the disabled or elderly. As for the teenagers, I have years more experience than any of them, yet I am unqualified to handle a “Class 1 Flammable Liquid”?? When will it be illegal for the residents of Oregon to ignite their own charcoal without a qualified attendant?
I do agree that this law can help those who need it, and other lazy asses like yourself.. But why can’t this be optional?

I have lived in many states and noticed that every state has its own way of balancing things out money-wise. So I say. leave OR to its no self pumping law… there are many ridiculous laws in every state.. this is not as bad. Instead of ragging on a state who is making jobs available to those less qualified you should focus more on the idiots in IN who say you cant wear sandals while driving, or in MN who say you have to have a permit to wear lipstick in public…
You know the problem here is it kinda dispells a lot of myths about passing costs on to the consumer. Oregon is not out of line nationally for gas prices despite having to pay a few hundred dollars more for it via gas pumpers.
My ex was laid off of his really good paying job in the construction field and got a job pumping gas so he could help raise our son, I don’t charge him child support but he still wanted to help. When things in his field picked back up he went back to work for his old companay but it helped make ends meet when he got laid off, thanks you assholes for thinking Oregon is so horrible for actually being active in the recession and creating jobs!
This law has created a lot of jobs here in Oregon. Especially for those just out of High School or needing a summer job. Maybe you should learn the facts before opening your mouth. And having no sales tax also allows for many things to happen here. Not all Oregonians are on welfare you idiot. Actually probably less than half do.
On indian properties it is legal for one to pump their own fuel and it is actually about 42 cents cheaper on the reservation as well.
Pumping gas in oregon has created jobs for people who can’t get better jobs,for people with certain disabilities,and teenagers. Living here in oregon and being a former teenage gas attendant who knows how to type,I have always voted against raising minimum wage,am a true Republican in a liberal state…..and I’m not on welfare! And there are a lot just like me. Thanks for the vote of confidence!
On a cross country drive, drove into Brookings and found I was not allowed to pump my own gas. If I were the merchant I would be pissed about having to pay someone 300-350 a week to needlessly pump peoples gas for them.

Chris, you are a Moron. Almost as stupid as Oregonians (who keep voting for this crap). Oregon is a welfare state with no sales tax (another stupid law) so they need as many jobs as they can to collect income taxes.
ummm Rick you are a jerk. What Chris is saying is true it provides thousands of people with jobs. I think all the other states that have sales tax are stupid for having sales tax laws. my father works for the state in the employment department and he says that if it wasn’t for these kids of jobs our unempoloyment would be even higher. plus the majority of people who pump gas are nice and either can’t get other jobs due to disabilities or they are ex-criminals or teens some are even retired folks that still wanna work some times. it may be inconvenient sometimes but there are days where i am lazy and dont want to get out of my worm car into the freezing rain just to pump my gas.

So by this logic we should make a law requiring supermarket attendants to fill your shopping cart for you–creates jobs don’t it. Never mind the inconvenience for the shopper.
This is a stupid law, and those who work as attendants should just learn to type and get better jobs than this.
